Prison Labor
Inmates could learn the importance of labor. Prison labor is a part of the execution sentence. Inmates would have motivation to work and learn vocational skills for the stable social reintegration.
Independent Prison Labor System
Inmates are required to work eight hours a day and improve productivity, and they are given business support funds when they work more than eight hours a day. Independent prison labor system promotes successful social reintegration and prevents recidivism by encouraging inmates to work hard and earn money for their after-prison life.
Vocational Training
KCS offers necessary vocational training and skill learning opportunities so that inmates can be prepared to and dream of new lives.
Current Status of Vocational Training
KCS has carried out vocational training programs with a training period ranging from three months to two years for 17 jobs, including the construction field, at correctional facilities across the country, and thereby fostering excellent skilled manpower such as master craftsmen and industrial engineers. It has also implemented a professional vocational training to become a barista and a hairdresser suitable for female inmates at eight correctional institutions, including Cheongju Women's Correctional Institution.
Participation in Skill Contests
KCS selects outstanding inmates among those who completed vocational training and have them participate in skill contest. They have been getting excellent results in regional and nationwide skill contests.
Employment Programs
KCS develops employment programs by offering opportunity to learn practical skills through skill training courses.
Support for Return to Society
KCS offers a professional and comprehensive employment support system to help inmates enjoy financially stable life after the release. Employment Support Association and Employment Task Force are established to perform programs. They are running various specialized programs including job placement.
Education on Small Capital Start-up
For inmates who are scheduled to be released and hope to start new business, KCS operates a 20-40 hours professional education program, which covers start-up items, managerial techniques, fund borrowings, market analysis and successful case analysis.
Job Meeting Day
Correctional institutions across the country have held a job meeting day in even months(six times a year) to provide inmates to be released a job seeking opportunity, and offer regional small and medium-sized enterprises a chance to hire employees
Hug Job Support Program
To systematically support employment of released prisoners(those to be released from prison), KCS has offered a phased and integrated employment support service up to the maximum single year period along with Korea Rehabilitation Agency.
Intermediate Treatment
A half-way house is provided so that an inmate expected to be released could have a place to prepare for the reintegration into the society. With thorough preparation and inspection, an inmate could experience and be ready for the outside world, thereby gradually adjust to the social life smoothly.
